Long Island Yacht Club

The Long Island Yacht Club’s setting on the Great South Bay makes us an ideal location for day sailors, as well as providing plenty of opportunities for overnight or longer cruises. A usual summer day starts out with light northerly wind early in the morning, and as the sun heats up the island, an onshore breeze builds and sets up around mid-day. With a steady on shore breeze of about 8 to 12 knots, the sailing conditions are perfect and continue in the afternoon as a southwest wind usually builds and lasts into sunset.

New York Rental Car FleetOur sailors are typically boaters who go out in their cruising boats for an afternoon sail, and occasionally will plan a more extended overnight trip, multi-day cruise to the east end and beyond, or to New York City. If you spend a family weekend out at one of the Fire Island ocean beaches or bay-side locations like Saltaire Atlantique or Ocean Beach, you can sail

back to the club and take a dip in the pool, though the view from the dock of the bay and the Fire Island Lighthouse will make you want to linger in the cockpit. There’s no rush, it’s another perfect day at the Long Island Yacht Club.

There are opportunities to meet and raft-up with friends or fellow cruisers from Power Squadrons, Coast Guard Auxiliaries or Yacht Clubs at Connetquot River, Patchogue Bay, Hemlock Cove, Gilgo Beach, Democrat Point, Coast Guard Cove, Tobay, Jones Beach Marina, Zachs Bay (great seats for summer concerts at Jones Beach Theater).

A series of club races are scheduled during the summer, these races are typically run every other Sunday form June through September. These are PHRF races for keelboats sailed over 4 to 6 mile courses and usually start and finish just of the club.

The club offers an ever-expanding Junior Sailing Program. The program currently runs for two four-week sessions during the summer, training is available on Optimist Pram and Sunfish boats, and we plan to expand to 420’s, Laser’s and any other platform in which there is a keen interest. The Junior Sailing Program is available to members’ children and grandchildren between the ages of 8 and 18. We anticipate expanding the program beyond the summer season, enabling those junior sailors who have a desire, to perfect their skills.

Programs exist that will sponsor skilled juniors to travel to Hawaii, Australia and Europe to compete internationally. Many of the Team USA Olympic sailors get their start from programs just like ours.

The Long Island Yacht Club is a member of the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association (GSBYRA), which sponsors regattas at various yacht clubs along the Great South Bay and encourages participation by young sailors from junior sailing programs at member yacht clubs. Many are two-day events for one-design sailboats. The most popular classes are now Sunfish, Optimist Pram, Narrasketuck, Flying Scot, Laser, JY15, and 420. As a member of the Long Island Yacht Club you are eligible to participate in these races.

The Long Island Yacht Club is also host for the annual Babylon Village Mayors Cup race, sponsored since its inception by the Long Island Yacht Club and officiated by the Mayor of Babylon Village. It is an invitational open to all cruising type boats racing under PHRF rules competition (all area yacht clubs and sailing associations are invited).

Race applications, instructions, and rules will be available via downloadable link prior to the race, and race results are posted on the club web site.
